Alexandria Main - Seller Feature

Alexandria Main is a woman empowering, gorgeous loungewear brand that puts Cambodia Women on economically stable paths. Continue reading on what makes Alexandria Main so special, or browse their selection of high-quality loungewear.

What drove you to start your business?

Alexandria Main is a fashion-with-a-purpose business. I first visited Cambodia in 2007 and I fell in love with the Khmer people and was simultaneously moved by the residual damage left by the horror of the Pol Pot genocide. This was the driver that led me to set up a fashion brand that would have a social purpose as its central mission.
My background is in public policy and foreign affairs.

The most sustainable and effective way to
transition countries out of poverty is to provide income and employment to women. When women
earn an income they are far more likely to spend it on the health and education of their children which
produces a ripple effect that benefits entire communities.

Who are your employees or your artisans?

I work with a studio called Fair Sew in Phnom Penh who make all Alexandria Main clothes. A studio
called Amboh makes Alexandria Main espadrilles. My silk fabrics are loomed by hand by artisanal
weavers in the countryside in Cambodia

How did you find them?

I found my manufacturer via an Alibaba search!
I found the weavers by walking around the streets of Phnom Penh, finding silk products and then
following the trail back to the suppliers.

What do they mean to you?

I have so much respect for the artisans who create by hand the fabrics that makeup Alexandria Main
pieces. Their weaving techniques have been handed down through generations and they make
exquisite fabrics.

What made you decide to start producing ethically?

Nothing is beautiful if it comes at the expense of another person. I want to make beautiful products
that make the wearer feel transformed and happy. Why would anyone want to own something that
was made by a person who was exploited and harmed in the process?

What impact has your business had on your community?

I would like to think that Alexandria Main, in a small way, creates understanding and conversation
around fashion as a force for good.

What was the most difficult part of starting and running your business?

The most difficult part of the business process has been reaching customers. There’s so much
competition in the fashion industry and it’s incredibly hard to be seen amongst all the rest. I’m so
happy that websites like Faire have been established to provide a market place for ethically produced
garments!

What has been the most rewarding outcome of your business?

I love working with my production partners – the Khmer people are faultlessly kind and full of heart. I
love the feel and look of the handwoven silk and I love the beauty of the final product.

What is your company’s mission?

Alexandria Main’s mission is to be a social impact fashion business that empowers Cambodian
women
